He attended Wright Junior College and then entered the University of Chicago from where he graduated in 1959 with an MA in Political History. In 1964 he began studies at Loyola University of Chicago where he completed the Ph.D. in Classical History in 1971. He served as Assistant Professor at Loyola University in Rome and Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. From 1978 to his retirement in 1999 he was Professor of History at Bridgewater State College in Bridgewater, Massachusetts and is now Professor Emeritus. Along with his other degrees, Dr. Karavites holds an MA in Byzantine Music. He has chanted for over 50 years and began his chanting services in America as Protopsalti at the Assumption Church in Chicago. In Massachusetts he has chanted primarily at the Annunciation Church in Brockton and has offered his chanting services throughout the Metropolis of Boston. He has taught Byzantine Music at the Hellenic College/Holy Cross School of Theology. He was ordained officially as psaltis by His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios, Metropolitan of Boston. Dr. Karavites is an Archon of the Order of Saint Andrew and was granted the officium of Archon Notarios of the Ecumentical Patriarchate. Dr. Karavites has written four books on Classical History and Patristics and has published close to 30 articles in professional journals. He has also published scores of articles in Greek American newspapers and periodicals among which are several on ecclesiastical subjects and Byzantine Music. He has received numerous awards from the Schmitt Foundation, the American Philosophical Society of Philadelphia and the National Endowment for the Humanities and received fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies and the Institute for Advanced Studies at Princeton. He has spent his sabbaticals at the University of Heidelberg and the University of Munich in Germany as well as the American Classical School of Athens. He is married, has two children and a granddaughter. |
