Unfortunately, FYROM has not reciprocated. On the contrary, it has insisted on pursuing aggressive and hostile propaganda. The latest example of such propaganda is the above billboard that was erected yesterday in the capital city of Skopje. The picture of the Greek flag with the Nazi swastika replacing the cross is deeply offensive and insulting to the patriots and heroes, Greeks and Americans alike, who gave their lives in fighting Nazism and Fascism during World War II. It is particularly disturbing for the Jewish Community of the Northern Greek city of Thessaloniki in Macedonia that was virtually exterminated during the war. These aggressive and unjustified actions are contrary to the principle of good neighborly relations and to the values shared by democratic nations, which are at the heart of NATO. It is precisely to put an end to actions of this nature that 115 Members of the House of Representatives, from both parties, and Senators Menendez, Obama and Snowe, co-sponsored House Resolution 356 and Senate Resolution 300, respectively, “expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) should stop the utilization of materials that violate provisions of the United Nations-brokered Interim Agreement between the FYROM and Greece regarding `hostile activities or propaganda' and should work with the United Nations and Greece to achieve longstanding United States and United Nations policy goals of finding a mutually-acceptable official name for the FYROM”. Sincerely, Alexandros P. Mallias |
