Plant Your Roots in Greece Foundation is a non-profit
organization, established in 1991 in Washington.
It was presented to the Greek-American community in 1994 at the annual
conference of the Hellenic American National Council held in Chicago. The foundation was placed under the
auspices of the National Council during the devastating fires in Greece. Over
the last years it has been very active promoting its program within the wider
Greek-American community and also in Greece where the first Greek branch
was established in 2004.
The aim of the American foundation is to sensitize visitors to Greece
and tourists of Greek-American descent in three areas:
“Our vision is to see Greece green again, as we Greek immigrants to America remember it” says Mr. Spyropoulos “The main idea of the organization is to combine the ancient Hellenic tradition of respect for nature with the Olympic ideal of volunteerism. We promote the spirit of reconciliation of man with not only the social but with the natural environment. Thanks to the generous response of Greek Americans and Philhellenes, our organization has carried out plantings in many regions of Greece. We have adopted the burnt area across from the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion, successfully conducting plantings in that area on five different occasions (from 2000 to 2005). With the consent of the municipality of Lavrio, we placed a commemorative plaque close to the Temple of Poseidon with the names of some of the Greek American and American donors inscribed on it. We have also planted trees in other parts of Greece: Vouliagmeni (1999), Samos (2002), Ancient Olympia (2002), twice in Delphi (2003 and 2004), in Kalavryta (2002), in Ano Viano, Crete (2005), in Maniaki, Messinia (2005), in Patra (2005), Ahinos, Serres (2006), Strymoniko, Serres (2006), Arta (2006), Samothraki (2006). This year we carried out plantings in the archeological sites of Dion Pieria (the second one will take place in September 2007
