Dear Friend,
As we are all too aware, over the last several weeks,
Greece has experienced its worse
series of wild fires in recorded history. Nearly 500,000 acres of
pristine forests, farm land, and villages have been
destroyed. Additionally, at last count 65 and maybe more people
have lost their lives and thousand left injured and homeless. The
costs of the destruction, in terms of human loss, property damage, economic
dislocation, and reduced tourism to our beautiful motherland is only now
becoming apparent.
Many of you have already expressed an interest to help. The
danger, as we have all seen in New
Orleans, is the waste that occurs when action is not
coordinated and focused where most needed. For this reason, the
American Hellenic Congress in cooperation with local Michigan Greek-American
fraternal organizations, along with other local groups, are requesting that you
join us in formulating a plan of action to support those who are suffering in
Greece and to try to restore the lost forests and farm lands.
On Tuesday, September 4, 2007, the board of the
American Hellenic Congress in conjunction with the World Council for Hellenes
Abroad (SAE) invites you to attend a meeting of concerned citizens to explore
how we can coordinate and help our fellow Greeks. The meeting will
be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Banquet Hall of Dimitriʼs on the
Avenue (formerly the City Tavern) at 14316 Michigan Avenue,
Dearborn (between Greenfield and Schaefer) (313-584-1515
). Mr. Ted Spyropoulos, Coordinator of S.A.E. based in Chicago will be in attendance. He will share with us the assistance plans presently underway and what we can do to help our beloved Greece. Your attendance and support would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely,Dimitri Pallas, M. D.President A.H.C.
